First Diabetes and Obesity Specialized Center

 

Rashid Center Treats 650 Cases and Receives 4000 Visits in Five Months


 

The UAE Ministry of Health opened at the beginning of 2010 the first specialized center in Diabetes and Obesity in Sheikh Khelifa Bin Zayed Hospital in Ajman.

 

The center managed to provide treatment for 650 cases in five months and receive 4000 patients. The center also made 26 obesity surgeries; all related to changing stomach course where most cases lost 40 kilograms since their operations. The center was able to prevent foot amputations of 7 cases through specialized surgeries.

 

The center includes the latest medical equipments with a total cost of 10 million Dirhams as well as treatment and preventive services and health researches in addition to preventive and genetic and clinic researches. The center serves the northern emirates and can receive 100 daily cases with a monthly average of 2500 cases transferred from doctors in the preventive medicine department and diabetes treatment sections in the different hospitals.

 

As both diabetes and obesity are related together, the center considers obesity as the main cause of diabetes in the UAE. It is also administered by a Swedish specialized company and gives treatment services and care for diabetes and obesity patients through using the latest treatment and surgical techniques.
